We in Tamil Solidarity strongly condemn the arrest of the Aragalaya protestors by the Sri Lankan police on fictitious charges. This is a direct threat to and intimidation of peaceful protestors whose only form of expression is the Aragalaya.
The government should immediately stop criminalising protesters and release all those arrested.
As the Prevention of Terrorism Act is still in effect, these emergency laws are a step towards the re-emergence of white van abductions, a terror faced by the Tamil community that will now create terror in the south.
We urge all protesters, defenders of democratic rights to go forward in opposition to the ongoing repression
