Join us for a talk from Manny Thain, UK co-ordinator for Tamil Solidarity, on human rights in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has been through a lot in the past 12 months, including the bloody end of a 25 year civil war, the subsequent incarceration of hundreds of thousands of civilians in detention camps, and most recently, a fiercely contested Presidential election.

Tamil Solidarity is an international campaign that was set up in early 2009, in response to suffering experienced by civilians during the closing stages of the war. At an initial meeting, held in Chennai, India, which included a statement by Nobel Prize-winning author Arundati Roy amongst others, a call was put out to spread this campaign around the world.

In the UK, Tamil Solidarity has supported the variety of actions taken by the Tamil-speaking community during the height of the war, and the subsequent incarceration of civilians.

It is also actively campaigning to highlight the plight of Tamil refugees seeking asylum in Australia but held captive on board a ship in the Indonesian harbour of Merak.

Following the talk, we will hold our group’s campaigns meeting. This is your chance to take a more active role in the running of our group. Whether you’d like to help out with existing actions or start one of your own, please do stay and have a say on our group’s activities.
